Ask Us to Show You How to Check for Signs of Oral or Neck Cancer on Yourself

Ask Us to Show You How to Check for Signs of Oral or Neck Cancer on YourselfOne of the most important reasons to keep your regular dental checkups it's because they can detect other more serious conditions going on in the rest of your body, including cancer.

When you come in for a regular dental checkup, we always look around your mouth for signs of oral cancer. The scariest thing about this disease is that it usually has no symptoms that may catch your attention.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Some symptoms that you can look out for are:

•  Red or white patches in the mouth, gums, cheeks or tongue.
•  Bleeding or pain in any part of the mouth.
•  A swelling of the jaw that affects how partials fit.
•  Sore throat or painful swallowing that doesn't go away.
•  Trouble hearing.
•  Ringing or painful ears.
•  Blocked sinuses that don't get better with antibiotics.
•  Nosebleeds.
•  Headaches
•  Pain in the upper teeth.

Symptoms of Neck Cancer

Depending on the stage and location, each type of cancer has specific symptoms, but there are some general things that you can look out for:

•  A lump on your neck.
•  Unusual growths in your mouth.
•  Blood when you spit or in the phlegm.
•  Changes in your skin color.

How to Do a Self-Exam

As with many other types of cancer, doing a self-exam at home is one of the most important things you can do to catch the disease early. Using a mirror, examine the floor of your mouth and under the tongue, where more than half of all oral cancer start. You should also be examining the roof of your mouth, your cheeks, lips, and the back of your throat for any of the signs mentioned.

For a neck exam, you should check your jaw by your ears, behind the ear nodes, the side neck muscles, the gullet, the chin, and the clavicle clutch. You will be looking for any lumps or bumps.
