Ways to Explain Jaw Pain

Posted on 9/13/2018 by Vladana Babcic Tal DMD
Ways to Explain Jaw PainIf you did not suffer a blow to the face but are suffering pain in the area, there are ways to explain jaw pain. Discomfort in the jaw can be caused by many reasons, some more serious than others.

Anything from chewing gum for too long, to jaw cancer, can explain jaw pain, so there are things you must watch out for, and if you suffer from specific symptoms you should call us.

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD or TMJ)

One of the most common reasons for jaw pain is what is known as a TMJ or TMD disorder. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which connects the jawbone to the skull. This joint allows you to move your mandible or jaw and open your mouth for eating, yawning, and talking.

Symptoms that could indicate you suffer from TMD are:

•  A clicking sound when opening your mouth to chew, talk, or yawn. It usually feels like the jaw pops.
•  Ringing in the ears
•  Pain in your ears or the TMJ area.
•  Headaches or migraines
•  Soreness in the jaw muscles

Bruxism

Bruxism is the unconscious clenching or grinding of teeth, which happens mostly at night while you sleep and can result in jaw pain. Some studies suggest that bruxism is related to stress and if you suffer from constant, unexplained jaw pain, this could be the reason why.

Dental Problems

A cavity that has grown worse with the passing of time, could be causing your jaw pain. When a cavity is untreated, it can cause intense discomfort and could be a way to explain jaw pain. It is essential to keep your regular checkups to avoid more serious dental problems.

There are also more serious conditions that can explain your jaw pain such as jaw cancer or a heart attack. Make sure you give us a call right away or go to urgent care if you have sudden pain in the lower, left side of the jaw. If your jaw has been bothering you for a while and you don't know why, let us know and we will bring you in as soon as possible.
