Gum Graft Cameo Dental Specialists IL 60305It is important to know what to eat and what not to eat after you have had gum grafts. Your oral surgeon will make sure you are provided with a detailed recovery plan, which includes recommendations on what things to eat or drink, and which things you should avoid.

The last thing you want to do is cause damage to the grafted area or hinder your recovery.

Depending the extent of your gum graft, the recovery time is going to vary. You are going to want to make sure you are not pushing yourself harder than you need to.

Typically, a gum graft is done due to stop gum recession and to help protect the roots of your teeth from further decay. This means that you want to do everything you can to expedite the healing process, not hinder it.

What You Should Avoid And Why

Alcohol shouldn't be consumed for at least 2 to 3 days following surgery. Crunchy, hard and sharp foods should be refrained from, as these can irritate and stab the spot that has just had the graft done on it. Very hot, very acidic, very cold and other extreme foods should be refrained from, as well.

What You Can And Should Eat Or Drink

After a gum graft, you want to stick to soft, non-tacky foods. This can include things such as eggs, yogurt, pasta, baked potatoes, and in some cases hot cereals like oatmeal or cream of wheat. However, if you are going to have a hot cereal, make sure you allow it to cool down before trying to eat it.

The general rule of thumb here is to consume food that requires minimal (or gentle) chewing. This will reduce the amount of force that is put on your surgical repaired gums and help prevent additional swelling, which could cause the procedure to fail.

If you would like to learn more about which foods to eat and which to avoid, call our office today. We will be more than happy to provide you with a list of foods you should be able to safely consume.
