The Basics of a Peg Tooth

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Vladana Babcic Tal DMD
The Basics of a Peg ToothA child's smile is a precious thing. It is something that brings joy to a parent. Children's smiles go through changes as they get older.

They lose teeth and they may need braces. One thing some children face is a peg tooth. This is not a term many parents are familiar with. These are the basics of what a peg tooth is, what it means and how to treat it.

What is It?
The term peg tooth describes the shape and size of certain teeth. The lateral incisors which are the teeth or either side of the front teeth are the ones that are the most commonly affected. Peg teeth are a cone shape and are usually much smaller than the other teeth.

For some people, the adult incisors will fail to develop That leaves a person with the baby teeth. When the baby teeth fall out, the replacement is an underdeveloped tooth. There are several conditions associated with pegged teeth, including Hutchinson teeth, Williams Syndrome, and Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Treatment for a Peg Tooth

There are many ways we can treat a peg tooth. Cosmetic procedures can take care of the problem. Crowns, veneers, bridges and partial dentures are a few of the options available for treatment. Leaving the teeth untreated can cause more problems. The smaller teeth can create gaps where bacteria can grow. This can lead to cavities and other problems.

If a child does have a peg tooth, it is a good time to stress proper dental care. Brushing and flossing are an important part of good oral health and can help a child avoid any issues due to a peg tooth. Regular dental visits can also help prevent any problems and can ensure that the child does not have any issues as their adult teeth grow in.
