How Posture Can Impact Your Jaw Pain

How Posture Can Impact Your Jaw PainPeople who suffer from temporomandibular joint disorders or TMD have pain in their jawbone. This happens when the ligaments and muscles that let you open, close, and move your mouth from side to side are misaligned and affect the bite. The symptoms can be mild to moderate and can even affect other areas of your body.

Posture and Jaw Pain

It may seem completely unrelated, but the health of the jawbone has an impact in other parts of your body. If you think about it, the muscles that make up the TMJ are connected to the neck and spine. It is no wonder that having pain in your jaw can translate into feeling the pain lower in your spine.

All these different groups of muscles are designed to work in harmony so when one is not functioning as it's intended, the rest can also suffer. When the jawbone is misaligned, the pain can radiate to the neck and even the back.

If your bite is not aligned correctly, the rest of the body must adjust to compensate, and with time, the stress placed on other muscles will expand to your posture. You can think of a chain reaction of events that, if not treated, will continue to grow worse.

Poor posture is not only an aesthetic problem. It can also affect the blood flow to the rest of the body and circulation. This prevents essential nutrients and oxygen from reaching other areas, which increases the risk for inflammation.

It is vital to diagnose the underlying reason for your TMD or jaw pain. Once we determine what is causing the problem, we can move on to treat you and make you healthy again. TMD is problematic because it can affect other areas of the body and decrease your quality of life from the constant pain and discomfort. If you have jaw pain, please bring it to our attention. Don't suffer in silence.
