Posted on 3/15/2019 by Vladana Babcic Tal DMD
Types of Temporomandibular Joint DisordersYou may have heard of the term temporomandibular joint disorders. You may even know what types of problems this can cause for anyone that suffers from it. While you may have heard of TMJ that does not mean you are an expert at it. You may not realize that there are different types of TMJ. To the people who suffer from TMJ disorders, knowing what the types are is important.

Three Different Types

All the different types of TMJ share some similarities. They all focus on the area where the jaw meets the skull. The muscles and the joint can cause a variety of symptoms when they don't work right. The types of symptoms and the severity of the symptoms vary depending on the type of TMJ. It is possible to define the three categories of TMJ by the cause and the symptoms.

•  Myofascial Pain - This is one of the most common forms of TMJ that people suffer from. It typically involves pain or discomfort in the muscles of the jaw. The pain is usually felt when moving the jaw. The causes of this type of discomfort include sleep position and overuse of the jaw muscles. The pain or discomfort is inconsistent and does not always cause problems.
•  Internal Derangement - This refers to conditions where the joint has been displaced for some reason. This can occur on one side of the jaw or on both sides of the jaw. Some of the causes include dislocation of the jaw are an injury to the area around the joint. This can cause pain until the joint is back in place and can cause clicking sounds when the joint becomes displaced.
•  Arthritis - People are familiar with arthritis but do not realize if can affect the joint connecting their jaw to their skull. Because it is a joint, arthritis can happen. This is typically a degenerative condition that typically gets worse over time.

Treating TMJ

No matter what type of TMJ you have, there are ways to treat it. Oral appliances and changes in lifestyle can help myofascial pain. There are procedures to fix the problem of internal derangement and medications can help combat arthritis in the TMJ.
