What Options Do Our Oral Surgeons Have to Treat TMD Pain?If you are having problems with your jaw joint, you know that it can be a very painful condition. Jaw joint pain can cause headaches, facial pain, ear pain, and swelling.

If you are experiencing pain or swelling from your jaw joint, you will want things to get better as soon as possible. We have some suggestions for you about treating TMD pain.

What Is TMD?

TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) is a disorder of your jaw joints. Your jaw joint is a sliding hinge that allows your teeth to move up and down, and your mouth to open and close. There is a disc of fibers in between your jawbones that cushions the bones and allows them to move freely.

However, when that disc of fibers gets irritated, it can cause pain in your jaw. You might have trouble opening and closing your mouth. You might not be able to chew food without pain. You may hear a clicking or popping noise when you chew. All of these are signs of TMD.

Treatment

There are several options we have to treat TMD. First, we may tell you to take anti-inflammatories to reduce the inflammation and swelling associated with TMD. We could also tell you to put ice on your jaw to reduce the swelling. If the cause of your TMD is bruxism, we could fit you with an appliance to stop your grinding your teeth at night or clenching them.

If these treatments don't work, we can always look into other ways to treat your TMD. We might also ask you if you know about the causes for your TMD, so we can treat it more effectively. If you have questions about your TMD, please contact us and let us help you treat your TMD. Why not give us a call today?
