Can You Strengthen Weak Enamel?

Posted on 4/25/2020 by Vladana Babcic Tal DMD
Can You Strengthen Weak Enamel? Enamel is the tough outer coating of a tooth. It is composed of a dense mineral-rich compound that can be off white to white that protects the insides of the tooth. Although super-strong over time the enamel can be degraded due to a variety of factors. Brushing too hard, acid-rich foods, and illnesses such as celiac disease play a key role in weakening tooth enamel. Without the enamel, the inner portions of the tooth are exposed to everything the enamel was trying to protect. This can lead to pain and other serious consequences. Here are a few ideas to help strengthen your enamel.

Eating Right

Eat foods that help build teeth instead of destroying them. Since many of our diets contain foods rich in sugar and processed ingredients it leads to more chance for decay. Eating foods such as whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products can slow down the decay process and help in remineralization. Foods that have been found to aid in the saliva process such as celery and cheese have also been shown to help strengthen the enamel. A good diet is a great step toward good oral health.

Brushing Daily

Brushing at least twice a day is a great way to help with weak enamel. The key is not brushing too hard and look for a toothpaste that has an enamel strengthening component in it. Fluoride is great because it is a natural material that aids in protecting the enamel. It is important not to rinse immediately after brushing to let the ingredients seep into the enamel further. With flossing daily and the occasional mouth wash, a few small actions can help rebuild weak enamel. If you are unsure about your enamel and if it is weak or not call us. We would be happy to schedule a consultation where we can discuss what you can do to strengthen weak enamel. Your teeth are important, and prevention is always better than treatment.
