Are Dental Implants Safe?

Dental implants are becoming a more and more common restorative procedure and are becoming more easily accessible as the years go by. Here at BiteLock, Dr. Pedro Franco has been doing implant procedures for years. From difficult cases to standard ones, he knows his practice inside and out. We are more than happy to help you if you find yourself struggling with finding a solution to your missing teeth. If you find yourself apprehensive, try not to worry. You are in very capable hands.

What Is A Dental Implant?

When you have a missing tooth, it is unbelievably important to get that taken care of as soon as humanly possible. Leaving the gap can lead to bone loss, gum disease, and the decay and movement of the surrounding teeth. A dental implant is a great way to solve this problem. This is a small post made of titanium (in rarer instances we can use zirconium as well) that is surgically installed in the gap left behind by a missing tooth. This post acts as the root of a false tooth, whether that is a crown, a bridge, or a fixed denture system. It is stronger than your natural tooth root and fuses completely with your jawbone. This means that it is immensely comfortable and feels natural.

Are They Safe?

Many of our patients wonder if getting a metal piece put into their jaw is safe. Titanium (along with zirconium if you need to go that route for whatever reason) is completely biocompatible. This means that is not harmful to the tissues in your body. The implants that we use today have been in use for over thirty years, and are considered very safe. Your body accepts these pieces and grows around them. Very rarely does a body reject titanium, but that is generally due to an allergy. However, only 4% of the population is allergic. In cases like these, we can use zirconium, which is equally effective at fusing with the bone and supporting whatever appliance you are deciding to use. We are experienced and expertly trained professionals, so this procedure is one of the safest that you can undergo. It is highly predictable.

Do Dental Implants Hurt?

Dental implants do not hurt during the procedure. You are under a local or general anesthetic during the surgery. You may experience some discomfort in the days following because the area was disturbed and incisions were made. However, the pain is usually mild and can be managed with over the counter medication. It passes after a couple of days.

Dental implants are nothing to fear, and Dr. Pedro Franco will take great care of you the entire time you are in his chair, and beyond. You will be in extremely careful and capable hands. For more information on implants, you can direct any questions or concerns straight to us, and we can help guide you. We can set up a consultation to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible before you walk in for your appointment.
