Bone Grafting
Chicago Area

Simple tasks, such as eating and speaking can become a challenge. These issues only get worse the more teeth you lose. Something else happens that you can’t see, at least not right away. When you lose your teeth, your jawbone begins to resorb, or weaken. This causes several things to happen. Your jawbone changes shape. Your remaining teeth shift from their natural positions, throwing off your bite. Your lips and cheeks sink in, and your skin begins to sag. Wrinkles form around your lips and eyes. Suddenly you look 20 years older, almost overnight.

Dental implants are a popular option for replacing missing teeth that can stop these issues from occurring. However, if you wait too long before seeking treatment, your weakened jawbone will be unable to successfully support implants. At Cameo Dental Specialists, we can restore the integrity of your jawbone, allowing you to receive dental implants, with a bone graft.

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a procedure used to maintain or enhance bone volume in an area of the jaw to facilitate dental implant placement or support the health of existing teeth. This technique is frequently performed at the time a tooth is extracted to promote bone growth. It can also be used in various ways to regenerate bone where bone has been lost over time.

Types Of Bone Grafts

Your needs are unique. There are several types of bone graft, and we can determine the best one to provide you with optimal results:
•  Autogenous graft. An autogenous graft is one that uses your bone material. The bone is considered to be living. As such, the graft material can promote new bone growth. Because it is your bone, there is no risk of infection or rejection.
•  Allogenic graft. An allogenic bone graft uses bone material from a donor. The bone is not living. It is just used to fill the void left behind by bone loss. Your bone grows around it.
•  Xenogenic graft. A xenogenic bone graft uses bone material from another species. The bone material is processed at extremely high temperatures, which reduces the risk of infection and rejection.
•  Synthetic materials. In some cases, we may choose to use a synthetic bone graft material to fill the spaces created by resorption. There are a few different types of synthetic graft materials such as demineralized bone matrix and bone morphogenic proteins.

How Is A Bone Graft Performed?

Before receiving a bone graft, we start with a consultation. We examine your mouth and take digital images of your mouth. These images allow us to see the exact condition of your jaw, and allow us to create an effective treatment plan.

Surgery starts with a local anesthetic. If necessary, a sedative can also be given to help you relax. We then make incisions in your gums, which provides us with access to your jawbone. If we are using your bone tissue, other incisions are made at the “donor” site. The bone tissue is taken from the donor site and placed in the areas of weakness in your jaw. The surgical sites are then stitched closed, and you are sent home to begin the healing process. Once you have healed from your bone graft, you can begin the process for dental implants.

If you lack sufficient bone mass in your jaw, rendering you ineligible for dental implants, bone grafting can help. Contact Cameo Dental Specialists at (630) 425-4488 to schedule your consultation today!
