La Grange’s story begins in the 1830s, when Chicago’s rapid growth pushed settlers westward in search of quieter land. Robert Leitch was among the first to arrive, settling the area in 1830, seven years before Chicago itself was even incorporated. At just 13 miles from the Loop, the area offered residents a rare combination: rural peace within reach of the city.

The village as we know it today took shape decades later, thanks to Franklin Dwight Cossitt. Born in Connecticut and raised in Tennessee, Cossitt built a successful wholesale grocery business after moving to Chicago in 1862. In 1870, he purchased farmland along what is now Ogden Avenue, once a Native American trail known as the Old Plank Road. Cossitt laid out streets, planted trees, donated land for churches and schools, and even placed liquor restrictions on the deeds he sold, all in an effort to build a model suburban village. La Grange was officially incorporated on June 11, 1879.

The timing proved fortunate. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, many city residents sought fresh starts within commuting distance, and La Grange was perfectly positioned to welcome them. Growth accelerated through the following decades, helped along by innovations like Dr. George Fox’s early telephone lines in the 1880s. By the early 20th century, La Grange had transformed from a modest settlement into a thriving suburban community, a legacy still visible in its tree-lined streets and historic homes today.
