Our Local History
Elmhurst boasts a rich tapestry of history that stretches back to its earliest days, when the Potawatomi Native American people settled along Salt Creek, the area’s initial inhabitants. By 1836, European-American settlers began cultivating the land alongside the same creek, laying the groundwork for what would become a thriving community.
The town’s origins can be traced back to 1842, when an Ohio native, Gerry Bates, founded a community in an area then described as “treeless land.” This area, now known as Elmhurst City Centre, rapidly grew with the establishment of Hill Cottage Tavern in 1843 at the intersection of St. Charles Road and Cottage Hill Avenue. The community was officially named Cottage Hill in 1845 following the opening of its first post office, further solidifying its status as a burgeoning center.
Significant development ensued when, in 1849, the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was granted right-of-way through the community, enhancing access to Chicago and bolstering the local economy. The railroad station, built in 1894, became a pivotal landmark. In 1869, the community embraced a new identity as Elmhurst, and just two years later, Elmhurst University was organized, marking a milestone in its educational heritage.
Elmhurst was incorporated as a village in 1882, with a population of between 723 and 1,050 residents. The establishment of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in 1926, the first hospital in DuPage County, underscored the community’s growing role as a regional healthcare hub.
The city’s tradition of community events is long-standing, with the Memorial Parade being held every Memorial Day since 1918, and the Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the third largest in the Chicago area, celebrated annually. These events showcase the vibrant community spirit that defines Elmhurst.
Over the years, Elmhurst has also been a center for commerce and industry. The Keebler Company’s headquarters was located here until 2001, and the city remains the home to major businesses like Sunshine Biscuits and McMaster-Carr Supply Co. In recognition of its family-friendly atmosphere and community-oriented spirit, Elmhurst was named one of the “Ten Best U.S. Towns for Families” by Family Circle magazine in 2014.
This historical legacy provides a rich backdrop to Cameo Dental Specialists in Elmhurst, where we are proud to offer our specialized dental services in a community with such a profound heritage and vibrant present.
