A Brief History of River Forest

River Forest’s story begins long before it was a village. The land was originally home to Native peoples, including the Potawatomi, who lived along the Des Plaines River until the 1833 Treaty of Chicago pushed most tribes west. In 1831, a steam-powered sawmill built on the riverbank drew the area’s first settlers, and by 1836 the community that would become River Forest, then known as Noyesville, had its first permanent resident.

Growth accelerated after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 sent families west in search of new places to live. River Forest was formally incorporated in 1880, largely because local leaders, influenced by the temperance movement, wanted to keep the community separate from the saloons springing up in neighboring Harlem, now known as Forest Park. That decision shaped the village’s early identity as a quiet, family-oriented alternative to city life.

The following decades brought paved streets, electric streetcars, telephone service, and a public library, along with an influx of prosperous residents who built grand homes throughout the village. Several of these homes were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, including the Winslow House, and much of this architecture remains protected today within the River Forest Historic District. In the early 1900s, Concordia University and what became Dominican University put down roots here as well, cementing River Forest’s reputation as a center of education alongside its residential charm.
